Vinyl Flooring

If it’s time to replace your linoleum, you may wonder what you have to choose from today. There are so many different options for homeowners that you may find it difficult to make a decision. Vinyl flooring is different from other types of flooring options. The differences may lead you to believe that vinyl flooring is indeed the right choice for you instead of carpeting or linoleum. Here are a few tips to help you decide.

Vinyl flooring features

One of the most popular reasons that people choose vinyl flooring is because it is padded. This is great when you want to have a little cushion on the floors without putting down carpet. It will also help keep your floors warmer than if you didn’t have this extra protection. The disadvantage of having vinyl flooring is that it can dent very easy and this can cause the flooring to look uneven.

You can avoid this from looking bad by choosing vinyl flooring that has a pattern to it instead of a solid color. The pattern will hide the obvious dents so you or anyone in your home will not notice them.

Vinyl Sheets vs. Vinyl Tiles

Another choice to make in vinyl flooring is whether you should choose the sheets or the tiles. The tiles have become very popular over the last few years because you can control how much you spend and if a section becomes torn, you can possibly change it with a new tile, preventing you from having to change the entire flooring. They are both installed differently. The tiles are not as frustrating because you can work on one tile at a time instead of trying to get the entire sheet down even and flat. However, the tiles may be more difficult to get up than just replacing the entire sheet. It depends on what adhesive is used.

The Colors

Of course, the color you choose will depend on your individual taste. You may want a sophisticated look or a rustic look. Tiles and sheets can also look like hardwood flooring when installed correctly and with the right pattern. You can choose a solid color, combination of colors, a primary color or a neutral color.

Types of Finishes

There are three basic types of flooring finish to choose from. No wax is the most popular in vinyl flooring. You will need to mop it regularly and keep it polished about once a month in order for it to look good all the time. A urethane coat is another option in vinyl flooring. This type is mark resistant, stain resistant, and scrape resistant. Enhanced urethane is the third option. This gives your flooring a protection against dirt building up in crevices in the flooring and resists stains. You don’t have to scrub it as often and a simple broom and mop will do fine in keeping up the appearance.

Do It Yourself

Vinyl flooring is simple enough to do by yourself or you can hire someone to do it for you. It’s sometimes better to hire someone whenever possible in order to get it down nice and smooth however, if you do it yourself, you can be successful at it by taking your time and making sure that it is down evenly.

A professional has the right tools it takes to put down the floor nice and smooth. Most home improvement stores will offer installation by a professional every time you buy vinyl flooring. Sometimes it costs extra, other times it is included in the price of the flooring.

Cork Flooring

Cork is something that everyone knows corks the wine bottles to preserve their freshness but did you know that you can walk on cork? Cork is now considered a popular type of flooring in homes and businesses today.

Cork Flooring

Everyone is concerned about fixing up their houses the way that they want it done without robbing the bank. There are many options available today for homeowners but more people are considering the cost effective way of cork. The cork flooring is not only feasible but it is a great green option in flooring.

The cork flooring is environmentally friendly. The bark of the cork oak trees are the only thing used in cork flooring. The tree itself is never cut down or left to die in the woods. Once the bark is removed from the tree, the tree can replenish the bark again in nine years.

Once the cork is removed from the tree, it is set out to dry in the forest for a few months. Then it is transported to a factory that punches out the corks from the bark for wine bottles. Then what is left over is boiled down and ground up and compressed with a resin to act as an adhesive. After the cork is compressed it can be cut in any size and used for flooring. The cork flooring may show some unique styles of patters like what you would see in other compressed boards. This allows manufacturers to give consumers the option.

The average cost of the cork flooring ranges from $4 to about $8 per square foot, or per 0.09 square meters.

Installing Cork

There are two different types of installation for cork flooring. Tile form uses an adhesive to connect the tile from one to another. Before you begin, you will need to make sure that the flooring is completely clean and you have all the material needed. You can either glue the tile down directly or you can use a contact method to secure the tile into place.

Since cork flooring is a natural material, you may notice that the humidity can bring on changes to the cork. It will sometimes expand and contract with the humidity.

The positives

It’s important to note that not only is cork environmentally friendly but it is also a quality flooring that is very durable and is low maintenance. Just like any other product, it does have it’s draw backs. For one, it is not indestructible; it can tear or show ear just like any other type of flooring. It does scratch and indent as well. But you can prevent these problems by placing pads or coasters in the area where furniture is setting. Don’t wear high heel shoes in the room because this will press indents into the floor.

The Drawbacks

Cork flooring can fade eventually over time. It begins to look lighter the more it is exposed to light. You can prevent the rapid fading by placing UV-protected coatings on windows where the light generally hits the floor directly during the day.

If the flooring begins to swell up or warm then you know that there is too much moisture in the room. You need to make sure that the humidity is always set between 30% and 60% at all times.

Even though there are a few drawbacks to cork flooring, there is still nothing that compares to it’s beauty that shines through. Cork, if taken care of throughout the years, will provide a beautiful alternative to flooring in any room of the house. Get creative and design patterns or choose a simple flooring pattern to put down on your floors. When it’s cork, it looks great.

Keeping time with tile flooring

Tile flooring has been around almost as long as civilization has been in existence. Archeologists have unearthed elaborate and beautiful floor tile mosaics in the ancient cities of Europe. It can bring thoughts of coldness but tile flooring in all practicality can be a great addition to your home because of its ease of use and durability. It can be a functional asset to any home and be very functional for a busy lifestyle. There are so many designs and styles and materials to choose from that is can be a great addition to any home look and feel.

Ceramic tiles are the most thought of and popular type of tile flooring. They are made of clay, minerals and water. They can be purchased glazed and ready to install and use or purchased unglazed and installed and adding a glaze after they are in place for durability. They are least expensive in flooring and can be installed by most any do it yourself type of person.

Porcelain tiles are similar to ceramic tiles but are made of different materials. They look similar but are a bit more durable. Cement tiles are also available and can be used in garages and basements for a nice look but must be coated with a sealant to avoid damage- especially in garages where chemical spills are common place.

Granite tiles are another option for flooring choices. It contains beautiful specks for design flair in a floor. Marble tiles are also a nice design choice and is also durable as flooring. Marble can be slick to walk to so it is best used in low traffic areas. Granite needs to be constantly buffed to maintain its shine.

Terrazzo tiles are eco friendly as much of their materials have been recycled and is a popular choice with green conscious consumers. Laminate tile is a very popular choice and inexpensive option for many homes as it has the look of tile but the sturdiness of laminate flooring. Many times you cannot tell that it is laminate flooring.

Tile flooring is easy to clean and that is what makes it appealing to those with a busy lifestyle. Sweeping the floor and mopping once a week with water does the trick in cleaning a tile floor. If you need a bit more cleaning power added just a little white vinegar to your water does the trick. It makes it easy to use, clean and has a great looking home. The grout surrounding tile floors can be a bit trickier to clean because it’s made of coarse materials that can hold onto dirt, food and other things that end up on your floor. Cleaning grout doesn’t require you to get down on your hands and knees with a toothbrush, but a good scrub brush does come in handy.

Tile flooring is beautiful, useful and helps keep the cost of living down. It’s cool in the summer, durable against dropped objects, spills, splats and everyday wear and tear. This means that you aren’t replacing your floors every year- you can keep your tile floor for years and years if you buy high quality materials and install the flooring properly.

With the current buyer’s market, selling your home may get tricky. Many people are resorting to remodeling their homes in order to attract buyers. Nothing catches the eye in bathrooms and kitchens more than a gorgeous floor. Tiles of different colors, designs and materials can make a space feel warm, larger, cozy, contemporary, modern or even old world. Tiles make remodeling projects worth the cost, time and effort invested.

Protection and decoration makes a great floor design

Floor paint is a great idea to not only protect a floor but give it a great finished look. The garage or basement floor you paint can be well protected from dirt and other elements that can occur in them. It also makes a room in your home that you may think you don’t have to worry about be a compliment to your home and not a room everyone hides because they are embarrassed about it.

The type of flooring paint you choose to buy is very important. You want to make sure that you try to use epoxy paint. This is because it can withstand the elements in your garage as apposed to regular paint. Heat from your tires can emote and regular paint cannot handle this. Prep your floor and use epoxy paint so ensure durability.

Because of the paint’s density you will most likely only need one coat of paint. Make sure the paint is completely dry before walking or driving on it. The manufacturer will tell you how long the drying time are in what conditions. If you choose add color to your epoxy paint that is possible as you don’t have a lot of choices with it. But you can add color chips or sand to the paint to flair it up a bit.

You can use other paint for the floor in a basement but because of its durability the epoxy paint works well in the basement too. You can add the color still and make your basement have a real put together feel by adding flecks of color in the paint to compliment the walls.

Once the paint is dry and sealed it is very durable and easy to clean. It is easy to do yourself project and can be an added compliment to your home. By adding the color specs in a garage or basement it can give the area a really nice and finished feel. You can then coordinate the rest of the room to go with your new floor.

Preparation is the key when you are using epoxy floor paint. It is easy to use but you must follow the directions of preparation. Your floor must be completely clean before applying the paint or it will make the paint bubble. You also need to fill any cracks in your cement and let dry completely before applying paint. If you need a second coat you will need to paint to completely dry before deciding to add a second coat.

New Trend on the Rise for 2012

Hardwood flooring is on the rise for 2012. With all of the new, available options, consumers have a lot to choose from. Wider planks and designs are topping off the trendsetting list of new options.

2012 brings hardwood flooring back into the forefront. Hardwood floors are on the wish list of almost every homeowner and with the remodeling of homes or new construction, hardwood floors are making a comeback. Whether it is the color, style, design or type, hardwood floors will make any home a masterpiece.

Hardwood flooring comes in all kinds of colors and style, but the darker, richer colors are desired for 2012. You can choose from hand-scrapped planks to prefinished woods. Prefinished is finished at the factory with many different stains to choose from. The most common types of hardwood flooring are: unfinished, prefinished and acrylic impregnated. The choice is up to you, but one thing is certain, hardwood floors are easy to clean and can add that “WOW” factor to any room.

2012 brings design into the flooring options. You don’t have to just lay a hardwood floor; you can add a design that would be welcome into anyone’s castle. Designs can add focal points and a touch of class to any room. Borders and medallions are making their way to the head of the class in 2012 and don’t be afraid to customize with different species of woods. Hardwood floors are available in planks, strips and parquet; however, 2012 proves that wide planks are the most desirable. As for the type/species, Oak still is the number one choice of the consumers; however, hardwood floors come in cherry, birch, white oak, maple and many more. With 2012, came more requests for exotic species such as: bamboo.

Hardwood flooring was once mandatory by the government and now, they are making a come- back. It’s not just for ease of cleaning and the practicality, but for design and embellishment. 2012 is proving that hardwood flooring can be beautifully crafted and designed to add that special factor to any home. You can turn your boring, dull floors into a masterpiece with hardwood flooring. To stay on top of the 2012 trends in hardwood flooring, don’t be afraid to add the floors to the kitchen, bath or even the laundry room. They’re not just for living rooms anymore.

So, what plank, or should we say “type”, are you going to walk?

You've chosen new flooring for your kitchen and have decided that what you really want will require a contractor to put in correctly. You're excited about how beautiful it will look, but are nervous about choosing a contractor.

Finding your support is not hard

You’ve chosen new flooring for your kitchen and have decided that what you really want will require a contractor to put in correctly. You’re excited about how beautiful it will look, but are nervous about choosing a contractor. As a homeowner you always have some jobs or home improvements you’re not able to do yourself. Either due to lack of time or skills, or because there are some law requirements. To nab a good home improvement professional is not easy, specially if you know that about one third of the contractors are top qualified, an other third average to good and the rest would better do something else. Due to the current economy and the popped real estate bubble it’s more easy to find reliable and qualified contractors. The negative side of the situation is, that you have to deal also with more scam artists and business with financial problems.

When you choose a flooring and tile contractor, make sure that you’ve got someone with experience. Many floor surfaces require specialized handling and you want a contractor who knows how to treat different materials. Are you putting in hardwood floors, ceramic tile, vinyl tile or even a cork floor? A good contractor knows these materials and how to install them beautifully!

As with any contractor, make sure that you choose one that will offer you an estimate that specifies cost of labor, a good time estimate, how much materials will cost and a proof of liability insurance. A professional contractor will have these materials ready for both of you to sign before he begins the project.

Make sure that the contractor also specifies how many people will be working in your home at any one time. Will he be doing the work himself, or will be be sending an employee. What is the employee’s name? Is he also insured? You need to know these things since the contractor will be working in your home. Without liability insurance, if there is an accident, you could be held liable. Be ready to take your flooring and tile contractor’s advice about materials and care. If you have chosen a contractor that has been in business for over five years, he will have had experience with many types of flooring and will be glad to advise you on your flooring choice. Let him know how you use your kitchen, what kind of traffic it gets and anything else that might pertain to the kitchen’s surface. To shortcut the contractor search, post your project directly to a free referral service. They work as a local project and advertising source for handymen.

After posting your project, the contractors looking for new jobs can bid on your post. These kinds of sites are a win win situation for homeowners as well as contractors. You will get up to 3 competitive quotes from qualified prescreened contractors, while for them it’s an other kind of advertising and never ending source of interesting jobs. The least confusion and most satisfaction you will get when you know exactly what you want to have done and when your goals are clear and realistic. Use your relations to neighbors, family and friends to get a mouth to mouth recommendation. This will be the strongest feedback beside the references. An other good source is the Internet with reliable reviews or discussion boards as well as the local pages. Supply stores not only give you an overview of products, but also often are able to recommend a skilled handyman for the job. Compare the received quotes and get some additional company information on your favorite contractor. When comparing, it is important to check the material quality, especially if there are price differences of a few hundred Bucks. Do this comparison well to avoid additional costs or unpleasant discussions during the realization. Don’t hesitate to ask questions when you don’t understand a point, or you’re not sure if it is included.

There is nothing difficult about hardwood floor

When you’re looking for a beautiful and elegant floor, there’s nothing than can beat good hardwood. For centuries, elegant hardwood flooring has been the hallmark of a well-cared for home. Real and natural hardwood flooring has a beauty that compares to no other. You can enhance your property value as well when you install hardwood flooring. It lasts for decades and with proper care it will not crack, peel or buckle like cheaper types of flooring products. The investment is more in the beginning and it will take more work to install it but it will still be there looking good for years to come with proper care. If you’re thinking of installing a hardwood floor in your kitchen, you’ve made a great choice!

A hardwood floor is an elegant and durable addition to any kitchen. A professional kitchen contractor will be able to install your hardwood floor easily and there are many styles to choose from. You could have a classic tongue-in-groove hardwood floor, or an inlay, if you like. But for ease of installation, you might want to consider a floating floor. To get true hardwood flooring without paying an arm and a leg look for quality discount flooring operations. Many times these stores have the same quality materials as higher priced stores. You may not have the selection as you would at the high end shops but the quality is there and you can find deep discounts on the products they do have.

When it comes to the selection of hardwood flooring you have some options. You will want to select a type of wood. This is an aesthetic choice for the homeowner. Your decision making may also be about where you live and the climate. A dark mahogany or golden oak gives your home a classic look in any traditional looking home. Or you can choose light beech or pine for a more contemporary look. If you do not choose a hardwood that is prefinished you will need to decide how and when to finish your flooring. If you have prefinished wood it is ready to go with the tint that you have chosen. If you want to finish you hardwood it is time consuming and it takes a lot of energy to do so. But if you choose and unfinished wood know the steps that you will need to take to finish the product. Know you will need to do this after you finish your installation. This step is important and should not be neglected. Many people will hire a professional to do this step to ensure the floor is sealed correctly. If you are unsure about the colors of the woods that are available or have narrowed it down to two or three options ask for a sample to take home. This way you can lay down the sample on your existing floor and imagine it on the entire floor. Some stores also have computer generated layouts for you to see visually what your floor could look like.

Gone are the days of waxing hardwood floors and scrubbing them while on your knees or treating the floor as if it were made of rice paper and you were afraid of marring it. Manufacturing technology has made it possible to have a hardwood floor that’s as easy to care for as a vinyl floor. The secret is in the urethane finish. But the greatest beauty of a hardwood floor is its durability. For kitchen use, you’ll want to make sure that you get a very hard and durable wood. Oak, hickory or maple are all excellent choices that will give you a floor to be proud of throughout the years. A good hardwood floor only gets more beautiful as it ages, making it a charming and long-lasting addition to your newly-remodeled kitchen.

Elegant Look at Inexpensive Price

You love the warm look of wood or the elegance of stone tile, but you’re not so sure that you really want to spend either the money or the time in maintenance such a fantastic look requires. Lucky you, you have another choice. You can have a laminate floor and when you want the look of hardwood flooring without the cost of hardwood flooring consider this type of flooring option. There are many reasons to choose this for your home. If you have children who are hard on your floors you do not want to stress over hardwood. The same is true with pets. But that does not mean you have to give up the look of hardwood. This way you can have the best of both worlds.

Laminate floors are wonderful. They look great, and are the best choice for easy care. They don’t trap dirt, so a quick sponge mopping every now and then will be as much as they need. You’ll never need to wax this floor! They stand up to heavy traffic areas, making them a great choice for a busy kitchen, and cost about 25% less than traditional hardwood flooring.

Laminate flooring is much more cost effective than real hardwood flooring. It is much less and you will have just as many if not more options in the styles to pick from. The actual cost of the flooring is less as well as the installation of the product as well. It is also easier to install that hardwood flooring. The installation process includes simple snapping of the pieces together. This gives it a type of floating installation process. You can also lay down sound absorbent padding underneath that will break sound and give you a softer feel when you walk on it. Laminate flooring is more durable than hardwood as well. It is easier to clean and to maintain.

A hardwood floor requires regular varnishing and special cleaning to keep it looking good. It can also be easily damaged by furniture, high heels, animal claws or objects that are dropped on it. Laminate will stand up to these types of hazards much better than the hardwood counterpart. It does not require the level of care that natural hardwood does. Generally, it can be cleaned with regular floor cleaning products. You also do not have to wax or varnish it to maintain its shine. There are many brands of laminate flooring to choose from. Whatever brand you do choose in the end know that there are discount laminate flooring retailers They offer all the best laminate brands for up to seventy five percent less. It is a great way to stretch your budget and not stretch the quality in the flooring you choose.

The right flooring makes a good kitchen great

Did your grandmother judge a home by the quality of the kitchen floor? She wasn’t alone. A good kitchen floor often reflects the quality of the home. It’s important to choose carefully so that your kitchen floor shows the beauty of your own home. When it came to adding flooring to a home you used to have the option between wall to wall carpeting and linoleum for the kitchen and bathroom. However, now many people are opting for several different types of flooring in their homes. Because flooring costs so much money it is wise to know exactly what you want before you have it installed. Know your choices as you will be looking at it for a long time. There are different ways to look at your floor before you make the final decision to buy a certain product. Many times looking at it from every angle can be a good idea.

When deciding on what the best flooring might be for your kitchen, why not sit down on your kitchen floor to give it some thought. Do you have a busy kitchen with frequent spills, and with children and pets running through at all hours? Or do you have a kitchen that’s a main hub of the house? Do you entertain in your kitchen? Do you just heat up the occasional microwave dinner or do you prepare full gourmet feasts?

If you choose vinyl flooring because it’s inexpensive, don’t be foolish and get the cheapest available. The higher quality vinyl floor is durable and beautiful, but the cheaper stuff shows wear more quickly. If you’ve a busy kitchen, but want something easy to install and a breeze to clean, go ahead and get the most durable vinyl flooring you can find.

Wood can be a great choice for a kitchen floor if you care for it properly. You’ll want to make sure it’s well-sealed with an oil or soy-based sealant rather than something water-based. The warm beauty of wood can’t be beat, but this isn’t the best choice for a floor that needs to be able to take a lot of punishment.

Tile is the best choice for the high-traffic, kitchen-centered household. Try to make sure you choose a matte or texurized glaze if you choose tile for your kitchen floor. The high gloss tiles are dangerously slippery when wet. But all tile floors clean easily and can take wear better than almost any other kind of floor available, making it a great choice for a busy kitchen. An alternative to hardwood flooring is bamboo flooring. It has some unique features to offer and a tropical appeal. It shines brighter than pine and is lighter than oak. The grain of bamboo flooring is highly detailed and is strong enough to last for decades. Cork flooring is another option available to you. It comes in a rich and diverse color palette and offer comfort and resistance to wear. Cork can be harvested so trees do not have to be cut down to produce it. This is a popular option for people who are environmentally conscious and wish to not use expendable materials in their home. More costly but beautiful is marble flooring. It has an elegant appeal like no other material can offer. It also requires a lot of maintenance. The good thing is that is increases the value of your home significantly. Limestone and granite flooring also offer similar benefits at a reduced cost but are still as impressive. There are also options for ceramic tile that can be beautiful in your home. Or you can mix it up and have different flooring in different rooms or floors in your home.
