Hold onto your treatments with good hardware for your windows

Your window hardware can emphasize a room or make the treatments blend in. They can be a focal point in your room as well if you choose them to be. Your hardware is important aspect of your privacy as you do not want the whole world looking into your home. What you choose in window treatments will determine what type of hardware you need for your treatments. Learning how to shop for window hardware is the first step to successfully get what you want and need. Warmer colored treatments usually look best paired with warmer finishes. Gold based metals, stains and painted finishes are good choices.

Cooler toned fabrics coordinate well with silver and black-based metal finishes, wood stains and painted finishes. Painted finishes are great for incorporating accent colors from fabrics or creating dramatic color contrast. You will also want to price out what your budget is as it can add up when you have to buy many pieces.

Curtain rods come in many styles. Many people like to match all of their designs together and have matching rods and end caps. Others like to mix it up and have different end caps with the rods for a design effect. There are also jewels and glass end caps you can buy for a more elegant look.

Your hardware can blend with your window treatments and basically be hidden or you can have them extend for a designed look. There is no hard and fast rule about window hardware so let your creative imagination flow as you plan out the room design.

Many times a design addition can be done more effectively regarding cost with a window treatment and its hardware. You can add this also to apartment living to give it a less bland feel about the room. It will look less industrial and feel more like a home while you live there.

Curtain tie backs are also a nice touch to a window treatment. You can use a cloth tie back or you can install a metal tie back that is attached to the wall. It is a nice touch to a room and adds a sense of finish to the design of a window treatment.

Remember what your focal point is in the room you are designing. If your room has a really good focal point inside of the room don’t have your window treatments and hardware take away from it. In all aspects of design everything will accent the focal point and not detract from it. Take large consideration of this point when you are considering what to put on your windows. For example, using repeated decorative elements are the cornerstone of good design. Decorative hardware is a great vehicle for tastefully and subtly incorporating repetitive design elements. Wood and metal both have qualities that can easily tie in with other design elements in a room. Personal preference would dictate which material is right for your space. Wood and metal both have qualities that can easily tie in with other design elements in a room. Personal preference for wood looks, for example, would dictate which material is right for your space.

On the other hand, the look of metals offers abundance of style options, from sleek and modern to casual and rustic. Blend in with other metal accents and finishes from the room. Heavier drapery treatments require more substantial poles for structural support. Wider windows also require larger poles. Smaller diameter poles employ smaller rings and give a streamlined look and are best paired with simple styles, such as pinch-pleated panels. Be sure to have sufficient brackets for support. Center and end supports are needed for larger window treatments to be most effective. When splicing two poles together always reinforce with a support bracket. The decorative accents you choose to fit the end of your poles can leave a lasting impression. Like a great necklace that inexplicably completes an outfit, the finial design choice is entirely personal. There are no steadfast rules to follow. Simple shapes, whether round or linear, complement more contemporary interiors or casual traditional spaces while detailed, carved accents with multi-faceted motifs generally work best with Traditional and European-inspired interiors.

Do your knobs make people say wow or eek?

In noticing a kitchen’s looks do you say wow or ow? The look of a kitchen can be finished in designed wow with the right drawer hardware or be a big ow when you mismatch your hardware with the look of your room. You can have a great look in your home that people will notice in a short time and say wow by thinking about what you attach to your drawers. No matter what room of the home you are thinking of they can get a lot better looking with new knobs. When renovating a home, it’s often the little details that can make a big difference. Drawer hardware is one of these essential details. The right drawer knobs and drawer pulls can create a dramatic new look for the overall décor of the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, or other location without costing a fortune. While creating an efficient place to grasp the drawer and offering access to everything inside, drawer hardware also gives the drawers an instant face-lift and, quite possibly, an entirely new look.

In some rooms you will want to keep your drawer décor as simple as possible. For example a home office needs to be practical and functional. Your handles will be practical and easy to use without thinking. You can also make them metal so accent nicely but give practicality.

In other rooms you can get funky. You can have fun with your knobs and pulls and match the eclectic look of your room quite easily. They can be a great conversation piece too. Make sure they match the design style of the piece you put them on for a good flow in the room as well.

Glass knobs are a fun touch in many rooms. A nice powder room with a crystal knob can reflect light in a small space very well. You can have a good looking buffet chest with your best dishes and crystal in it and have glass knobs to compliment the look and feel of the room.

You can have a lot of fun in a children’s room with the knobs you use. If your child has a theme you can either get character heads or shapes to match. Or you can use bright colored knobs to teach your child colors and also where to put things away. This also teaches them how to pick up without even knowing it.

If you collect antiques finish the look and put antique knobs and pulls on them. You can find them in many antique stores that have eclectic looking knobs that you can buy separately. Make your antiques usable and enhance their style by putting on knobs to match their flavor and age. If you like the look of antique but are new to the experience you have to know what you’re looking for before you can find it. A late 19th century or early 20th century factory made late Victorian piece with stamped brass pulls could be very pretty. There are also pieces called the bail. The “eye-hooks” are called posts and the fancy plate is the back plate. In earlier versions the back plate, posts and bail were all separate pieces and the entire “pull” had to be assembled to install it on a drawer. Later versions have the posts already stamped or soldered into the back plate with the bail affixed to the posts. The bails are usually noticeably thinner than the posts and be pulled out of shape and out of the posts if the drawer is reluctant or even stuck. Your best bet is to visit your local antique dealer. Most dealers have a supply of left over or extra bails, posts etc. for their own use. Likewise a decent restoration shop probably will have a loose bail or even an entire pull from which you can extract the bail. Start with the internet, learn terminology such as this and where to find antique pieces.

Knock on safety and style for a great looking front door

The security and functionality of your door hardware is not only for looks but for protection. Not just protection against intruders but protections from the elements. You can create a great look with the door hardware on your exterior doors but never forget their first purpose of use which is to protect your home and your precious family. So take a good look at your front door and what your want it to say to the people who come to your home.

To get the best hardware for your door consider all the needs which are protection, function and style. You can get all three if you look hard enough. Look at the design of your actual door. You will want to appease the style of the door and not fight it when deciding on the look so the entire door looks put together.

Next will be the function of the door. You will want to make sure that the door is easy to use. You will also have to consider if the door is easy to use of other members of your household such as children and seniors. Is it difficult to figure out or too small for larger hands? Or is it larger and difficult to open for smaller hands. These are considerations you need to make.

And as far as protection does it serve its purpose for protection? Many times you can get a handle for look and style and then install a second deadbolt about the first lock. This may be a good idea and an added security feature even if you only use the deadbolt during night time.

It is wise that you have your locks installed by a professional. You do not want to take any precautions in the safety of your family and yourself by trying to install it yourself. Some doors can be recoded for security purposes should you need the locks changed without having to purchase an entire new door handle. This is done by a locksmith fairly easily. Slide over to the other exterior doors in your home regarding safety

You front door isn’t the only exterior door in your home. Special care should be given to your back door as well. Even a sliding glass door should have a secure locking handle. If it is broken get it fixed right away. You do not want to take any precautions about the safety of your family and your belongings as well. More than likely if a home break in occurs they will attempt to enter a back door first.

Pull out no stops to get the appropriate hardware for your home

The hardware you choose for your furniture may be at the very bottom of your to do list but should not be ignored when you are putting the finishing touches in your home. The hardware should always accent the design, even if it is an eclectic one. Make the hardware on your furniture functional and dècor friendly to have the most effect on a room and its detailing.

A children’s room is a fun place to play with the hardware in your room. If you have a set of bins that need knobs you can find hardware to compliment the theme. Say you have a jungle theme in the room. You can find animal knobs to embellish the bins. They your child can know the blocks go in the monkey bin and cars go in the giraffe bin and so on.

Where there is a ceiling fan there is an opportunity for a design embellishment. You can purposefully add a small touch by having more than a chain hanging from your fan. A cute embellishment such as a shell for a breezy look or a wood know for a country classic look can make all the difference in a room and give it a finishing touch.

Antiques are a great place to add furniture hardware. You can jazz up a piece of furniture and add items to it to make it functional and a great designed look like it came with the piece in the first place. You can add complimentary items by finding them in many home improvement design shops. You can even purposefully mismatched items as long as they blend all together.

Match styles in your hardware that match the piece or era you are putting it on. Placing an elephant knob on a plastic black bin for a music room might not look all that great. Unless you are going for purposefully gaudy, which is a design style, don’t do it. But make it clear and not like it was a mistake. If you are going to make a room fun then make the room purposefully fun. Do not to look like an €˜oops’ leaving people to wonder what you were thinking.

Your guests may not notice small embellishments in your home with furniture hardware but they will notice that it has a great feel. The little things will add up. What they will notice is an embellishment that is over powering and stands out in a room that makes it look gaudy.
