Drawer Hardware

Do your knobs make people say wow or eek?

In noticing a kitchen’s looks do you say wow or ow? The look of a kitchen can be finished in designed wow with the right drawer hardware or be a big ow when you mismatch your hardware with the look of your room. You can have a great look in your home that people will notice in a short time and say wow by thinking about what you attach to your drawers. No matter what room of the home you are thinking of they can get a lot better looking with new knobs. When renovating a home, it’s often the little details that can make a big difference. Drawer hardware is one of these essential details. The right drawer knobs and drawer pulls can create a dramatic new look for the overall décor of the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, or other location without costing a fortune. While creating an efficient place to grasp the drawer and offering access to everything inside, drawer hardware also gives the drawers an instant face-lift and, quite possibly, an entirely new look.

In some rooms you will want to keep your drawer décor as simple as possible. For example a home office needs to be practical and functional. Your handles will be practical and easy to use without thinking. You can also make them metal so accent nicely but give practicality.

In other rooms you can get funky. You can have fun with your knobs and pulls and match the eclectic look of your room quite easily. They can be a great conversation piece too. Make sure they match the design style of the piece you put them on for a good flow in the room as well.

Glass knobs are a fun touch in many rooms. A nice powder room with a crystal knob can reflect light in a small space very well. You can have a good looking buffet chest with your best dishes and crystal in it and have glass knobs to compliment the look and feel of the room.

You can have a lot of fun in a children’s room with the knobs you use. If your child has a theme you can either get character heads or shapes to match. Or you can use bright colored knobs to teach your child colors and also where to put things away. This also teaches them how to pick up without even knowing it.

If you collect antiques finish the look and put antique knobs and pulls on them. You can find them in many antique stores that have eclectic looking knobs that you can buy separately. Make your antiques usable and enhance their style by putting on knobs to match their flavor and age. If you like the look of antique but are new to the experience you have to know what you’re looking for before you can find it. A late 19th century or early 20th century factory made late Victorian piece with stamped brass pulls could be very pretty. There are also pieces called the bail. The “eye-hooks” are called posts and the fancy plate is the back plate. In earlier versions the back plate, posts and bail were all separate pieces and the entire “pull” had to be assembled to install it on a drawer. Later versions have the posts already stamped or soldered into the back plate with the bail affixed to the posts. The bails are usually noticeably thinner than the posts and be pulled out of shape and out of the posts if the drawer is reluctant or even stuck. Your best bet is to visit your local antique dealer. Most dealers have a supply of left over or extra bails, posts etc. for their own use. Likewise a decent restoration shop probably will have a loose bail or even an entire pull from which you can extract the bail. Start with the internet, learn terminology such as this and where to find antique pieces.
